Small Wonders
DESCRIPTION
Inspired by early nature documentarian Frank Percy Smith (1880-1944), a pioneer in timelapse and microcinematography, Small Wonders references his work The Birth Of A Flower (1910) in which timelapse photography captures flowers opening their petals to the light.
Initiated through a collaboration with photographer and director Katy Beveridge, the project brings to life a series of mythical flowers constructed with armature wire and leather off-cuts (as a continuation of the ‘Ikebana Series’) through a series of stop-motion short films.
Exploring encyclopedias of botanical illustrations informed designing the series of imagined flowers, with the process of animating their movement used as means to first discover the characteristics of their action and bloom.
